Mugurel Surupaceanu on Building Romania’s Renewable Energy Future

A Conversation With Mugurel Surupaceanu

As Europe accelerates its transition toward clean energy, Romania is emerging as one of the region’s most promising renewable energy markets. At the center of this transformation is Enero Furnizare, a company evolving from consultancy and investment services into a major developer of large-scale solar infrastructure.

We spoke with Mugurel Surupaceanu about Romania’s renewable energy potential, the challenges of scaling infrastructure, and the long-term vision driving Enero Furnizare’s ambitious expansion plans.

Romania’s Potential as a Regional Energy Hub

We started the interview by asking, “What is the long-term vision behind Enero Furnizare’s expansion into large-scale renewable energy projects in Romania?”

Mugurel Surupaceanu replied, “Our long-term vision goes beyond developing individual projects. We see Romania as having the potential to become a strategic energy hub in Southeast Europe, not only energy independent, but also a net exporter of clean energy.

Through Enero Furnizare, we are building a portfolio of large-scale solar projects, primarily in southern Romania, where solar irradiation is among the highest in the region. In the first phase, we are developing over 1 GW, with a clear roadmap toward approximately 2 GW of installed capacity.

But this is not just about megawatts. It is about creating an ecosystem, one that attracts international investment, accelerates infrastructure development, and contributes directly to local economies.

Our approach combines financial structuring expertise with strong international partnerships. This allows us to move faster, build smarter, and ensure that every project is both bankable and future proof.

Ultimately, our goal is to help position Romania as a key player in Europe’s clean energy transition.”

From Consultancy to Renewable Energy Development

The Arab Today: How did Enero Furnizare evolve from a consultancy and investment firm into a renewable energy developer?

Mugurel Surupaceanu responded, “The evolution of Enero Furnizare reflects a deeper transformation we recognized early on.

When we started in 2002, our focus was on consultancy and investment support. Over time, it became increasingly clear that the energy sector was shifting from centralized, conventional generation toward decentralized renewable systems.

We made a conscious decision to move from advising projects to building them.

Our background in financial structuring gave us a strong advantage. We understood investor expectations, risk management, and how to align projects with evolving regulatory frameworks.

That expertise enabled us to transition naturally into energy trading and eventually into full-scale renewable energy project development.

Today, Enero Furnizare operates at the intersection of infrastructure, development, and energy markets, and this evolution is the result of adapting early and acting decisively.”

Navigating the Challenges of Large-Scale Solar Development

The Arab Today: What are the biggest challenges in developing utility-scale solar projects in Romania?

Mugurel Surupaceanu explained, “Developing large-scale renewable projects is not just a technical challenge, it is a test of persistence and coordination.

One of the biggest obstacles is the time required for permitting and grid connection approvals. Projects can face delays of months or even years if these processes are not carefully managed.

We address this by collaborating closely with national grid operators and local authorities from the earliest stages. Our focus is not simply development, but long-term feasibility and system integration.

Another important challenge is grid stability, particularly with intermittent renewable sources like solar. To address this, we are actively exploring hybrid solutions, including complementary gas-to-power systems, to ensure reliable and balanced energy supply.

Financing also plays a critical role. Large infrastructure projects require confidence from institutional investors. By designing projects that are technically strong and financially structured to reduce risk, we increase both bankability and long-term attractiveness.

In this sector, success comes down to the ability to navigate complexity without losing momentum.”

Strengthening Romania’s Energy Security

The Arab Today: How do Enero Furnizare’s renewable projects contribute to Romania’s energy security and sustainability goals?

Mugurel Surupaceanu replied, “Romania is in a unique position. It has strong natural resources, a strategic geographic location, and increasing relevance within the European energy market.

Our projects contribute directly by increasing domestic electricity production, reducing reliance on imports, and lowering carbon emissions.

But the impact extends beyond energy generation alone.

In regions such as Dolj and Timis Counties, these projects attract investment, create jobs, and stimulate economic development in communities that need long-term growth opportunities.

Renewable energy is often viewed only as an environmental objective. In reality, it is also a major strategic economic opportunity.

By scaling solar infrastructure, Romania can strengthen both its energy security and its economic resilience.”

Leadership Built on Long-Term Responsibility

The Arab Today: What leadership principles guide your approach to building and scaling energy infrastructure companies?

Mugurel Surupaceanu shared, “In energy, leadership is not about short-term results, it is about long-term responsibility.

I focus on three core principles:

Strategic patience
Energy infrastructure requires long-term thinking. You must think in decades, not quarters.

Strong partnerships
No major infrastructure project is built alone. Alignment between investors, institutions, and operators is essential. Transparency builds trust, and trust builds projects.

Commitment to innovation and sustainability
The future of energy is not only clean, it must also be intelligent. Companies need to continuously adapt, invest in modern technologies, and remain open to new solutions.

At the end of the day, energy is not just about power generation.

It is about building the foundation for future generations, and that is the responsibility we carry with every project we develop.”

Driving the Next Chapter of Europe’s Clean Energy Transition

As renewable energy investment accelerates across Europe, Enero Furnizare is positioning itself at the forefront of Romania’s clean energy transformation. Under the leadership of Mugurel Surupaceanu, the company’s focus on large-scale solar infrastructure, strategic partnerships, and long-term sustainability reflects a broader vision: transforming Romania into a regional clean energy powerhouse.
