Iraq’s Electricity Ministry Makes Deal With Türkiye’s Alifrin to Double Power Line Capacity

Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity signed a deal with Turkish company Alifrin on Wednesday to increase the power sent through the Iraq-Turkey electricity line from 300 to 600 megawatts (MW).

Iraq-Türkiye Electricity Deal

Iraq and Türkiye have signed a new electricity agreement. In the first phase, Iraq will get 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity through a high-voltage line called the Jazara-Kask line in Nineveh Governorate. In about a month, the total electricity supply is expected to increase to 600 MW.

This project will help improve the electricity supply in northern Iraq. The power line also connects Iraq’s electricity network with Europe’s energy system through Türkiye.

The deal uses a “take and pay” method. This means Iraq will only pay for the electricity it actually uses, giving the country more control over its energy costs.

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity said all the technical work and agreements for the project are already completed. This is part of Iraq’s plan to get electricity from different sources and not depend too much on just one.

Stronger Ties Between Türkiye and Iraq

Last month, Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani visited Türkiye to improve relations between the two countries.

During the visit, Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat said both sides are working to increase their trade to $30 billion and boost investments.

Türkiye mostly exports products like jewelry, machines, furniture, clothes, flour, plastics, building materials, and food to Iraq. In return, Iraq sends crude oil, jewelry, copper, and similar items to Türkiye.

Prime Minister al-Sudani called the “Development Road Project” — a 1,200 km transport route connecting the Persian Gulf to Türkiye — one of the most important projects in the Middle East.

Big Numbers

So far, Turkish companies have invested about $35 billion in Iraq. In 2024, trade between the two countries was more than $15 billion, according to Türkiye’s Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, Erman Topçu.
