BP Starts New Gas Production from Egypt’s Offshore Raven Field
BP has announced the start of gas production from a new well in the Raven field, located offshore Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea. According to reports, BP began production from the RW5 well, adding around 80 million cubic feet of gas per day to the West Nile Delta project.
Supporting Egypt’s Energy Goals
BP’s Regional President for the Middle East and North Africa, Nader Zaki, said this new production is part of an additional well program in the Raven field. He added that the move supports Egypt’s plan to meet local energy demand and aligns with BP’s goal to grow its presence in the region.
The RW5 well’s production comes alongside the recently increased output from the RW4 well. Together, the two wells now produce about 140 million cubic feet of gas per day since the start of the year.
Zaki also mentioned that BP has recently signed a contract for a deepwater drilling platform. The company plans to drill five development and exploration wells in the Mediterranean, with drilling expected to start in April 2026.
BP operates the West Nile Delta facilities and holds an 82.75% stake in the project. The remaining 17.25% is owned by Harbor Energy.
Offshore Drilling Agreement
In October, Egypt’s Cabinet announced that BP and Valaris, a UK-based drilling company, signed a contract to drill five new gas wells in the Mediterranean Sea. Under this deal, BP will drill in water depths ranging from 300 to 1,500 meters using the Valaris-owned deepwater rig DS-12.
This new drilling campaign aims to boost Egypt’s domestic gas supply next year and explore new gas reservoirs. The goal is to increase local production capacity and reduce the country’s need for gas imports, helping Egypt save costs and strengthen its energy independence.
Strengthening Energy Cooperation
Earlier in July, Egypt signed another agreement with BP and Italy’s Eni to speed up offshore gas exploration in the Mediterranean. This deal is part of Egypt’s broader plan to expand energy production and make better use of its untapped offshore resources.
By partnering with international energy companies, Egypt hopes to attract more investment and technology to support its growing energy sector. These efforts are crucial for meeting rising domestic energy needs and boosting the country’s role as a regional gas hub.
A Step Forward for BP and Egypt
The new production from the Raven field marks another milestone in BP’s long-standing partnership with Egypt. It demonstrates the company’s continued confidence in the country’s energy potential and its commitment to helping Egypt strengthen its gas production network.
With the additional wells planned for 2026 and ongoing exploration efforts, BP’s activities in the Mediterranean are expected to further increase gas output and support Egypt’s economic growth in the coming years.
