UAE President Meets OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to Talk About AI

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. The meeting focused on building stronger cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) between OpenAI and UAE partners, according to state news agency WAM.

AI Cooperation

The two sides plan to work together on AI research and real-world uses of the technology. This supports the UAE’s goal of creating a complete AI ecosystem and advancing the country’s development plans.

Altman praised the UAE’s vision for AI and its partnerships worldwide. During the visit, he was awarded the first honorary doctorate from the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, recognizing his global leadership in AI.

The meeting was also attended by several UAE leaders, including Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and National Security Adviser.

Stargate UAE Project

In May, state-backed company G42 partnered with OpenAI, Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank, and Cisco to launch Stargate UAE, a powerful AI compute cluster in Abu Dhabi.

This project is part of the new UAE–US AI Campus, a large 5-gigawatt digital hub that aims to be one of the biggest in the world outside the US. The first phase, a 200-megawatt setup, is expected to be ready in 2026. Stargate UAE will focus on advancing AI in healthcare, energy, finance, and transport.

The UAE–US AI Campus was announced just a week earlier in Abu Dhabi during US President Donald Trump’s Middle East tour.

UAE’s AI Strategy

The UAE launched its AI strategy in 2017 to support its long-term UAE Centennial 2071 vision, improve government services, and become a global leader in AI investments across sectors.

In early 2025, Abu Dhabi’s government introduced the Abu Dhabi Government Digital Strategy 2025–2027. This plan focuses on creating an AI-powered government and includes $3.54 billion (AED 13 billion) in funding by 2027 to drive innovation and technology adoption.
