Kuwait Starts Combining Government Oil Companies in Big Industry Change

Kuwait’s National Petroleum Company (KNPC) has officially started merging with Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC) as the country works on changing how its energy industry is organized.

Kuwait Starts Company Merger

Wadha Al-Khatib, the CEO of KNPC and acting CEO of KIPIC, told employees that the two companies are merging to make operations smoother and more efficient in Kuwait’s oil industry. She said this plan follows legal and professional rules.

Al-Khatib explained that since the global oil and gas market is changing fast, Kuwait’s energy companies need to keep up and improve performance.

The goal of the merger is to combine the strengths of both companies, improve their work, and form one strong company that supports Kuwait’s energy goals and its plans for sustainable development.

She also promised that employees will remain a top concern during this change and that they’ll be updated as things move forward.

KNPC manages oil refining in Kuwait, while KIPIC runs the facilities at the Al Zour refinery.

Wadha Al-Khatib was recently ranked number four on Forbes Middle East’s list of the 100 Most Powerful Businesswomen in 2025.

Other Mergers in the Region

This merger is part of a bigger trend in the Gulf’s oil and gas sector. For example, in 2018, Qatar merged QatarGas and RasGas to form QatarEnergy. More recently, in March, Abu Dhabi’s state-owned ADNOC joined its polyolefin business with Austria’s OMV to create a major chemicals company.

Kuwait’s Oil Production

Kuwait has increased its oil production capacity to over 3 million barrels per day by the end of 2024, according to Sheikh Nawaf Saud Al-Sabah, CEO of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC).

He said Kuwait wants to raise this number to 4 million barrels per day by 2035.

This total includes 500,000 barrels per day from the neutral zone Kuwait shares with Saudi Arabia. Even though Kuwait’s OPEC+ limit is about 2.7 million barrels per day, actual exports are lower because around 400,000 barrels per day are used to meet local demand.
