Abu Dhabi’s G42 and Nvidia Start AI Weather Forecasting System in UAE, Plan to Expand Worldwide

Abu Dhabi’s G42 and US chipmaker Nvidia have created a new weather forecasting system. It is designed to predict extreme weather events in the UAE. They also plan to use it in other countries in the future.

G42-Nvidia Partnership

G42 and Nvidia first partnered to set up the Earth-2 Climate Tech Lab in Abu Dhabi. Now, they’ve created a new weather forecasting system that is faster, cheaper, and can predict extreme weather by studying local conditions.

Inception, a company under G42, developed a special version of a model called CorrDiff. It gives detailed weather forecasts for Abu Dhabi and other cities, helping governments and industries prepare early for bad weather.

Andrew Jackson, CEO of Inception, said CorrDiff can adjust to local weather patterns and be used in other areas facing climate challenges. Besides weather forecasting, it can also help in aviation, city transport, energy systems, and environmental planning.

G42 used detailed fog simulations over the UAE to improve its forecasting system, making it better at predicting fog and increasing safety in different industries.

Core42, G42’s digital infrastructure company, will host the new system and use Nvidia’s technology for computing power.

G42 also plans to take this technology to other climate-vulnerable regions, like Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, to help reduce disaster risks.

Sovereign Cloud System in Abu Dhabi

Core42 and Microsoft announced they’ve signed a multi-year deal with Abu Dhabi’s government to build a sovereign cloud system. This will help speed up the city’s digital and AI transformation.

The powerful cloud system will handle over 11 million digital transactions every day between Abu Dhabi’s government, people, and businesses.

Abu Dhabi plans to automate all government services with a $3.5 billion investment in digital infrastructure, as part of its Government Digital Strategy for 2025-2027.
