Qatar Becomes First Gulf Nation In US Visa Waiver Program

Qatar is the first Gulf country to join the US visa waiver program.

Starting December 1, 2024, Qatari citizens can apply online through an updated system to travel to the US for up to 90 days for tourism or business without needing a visa. The US Department of Homeland Security announced this on Tuesday.

Qatar is now the 42nd country in the program, which also requires those countries to let US citizens visit them without a visa.

US citizens can already visit Qatar without a visa. Starting October 1, 2024, they can stay for up to 90 days (instead of the previous 30-day limit) as long as they have a passport valid for at least three months and a confirmed hotel booking.

Qatar was officially added to the US Visa Waiver Program by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, with input from Secretary of State Antony Blinken. This partnership is expected to strengthen US security and promote travel and trade between the two countries, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

Secretary Blinken said that Qatar meeting the strict security requirements for the program will deepen the relationship between the two nations and improve the movement of people and commerce.
