Egypt Signs $220M Deal to Build Solar Complex in Suez Canal Zone

Egypt has signed a $220 million deal with investors from China, the UAE, and Bahrain to build a large solar energy complex in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The complex will make solar cells, solar panels, and energy storage units.

According to the Egyptian Cabinet, the project will cover 200,000 square meters in the Sokhna Industrial Zone and should be finished in three years.

China’s JA Solar will be the main technical partner, working with Egypt’s AH for Industrial Management, the UAE’s Global South Utilities, and Bahrain’s Infinity Capital. JA Solar, founded in 2005, is one of the world’s top solar product companies, active in over 165 countries.

The new complex will include:

  • A solar cell factory with a 2-gigawatt capacity

  • A solar panel plant with the same capacity

  • An energy storage facility with a 1 gigawatt-hour capacity

All solar cells will be exported to global markets, while the panels will be used to meet local demand in Egypt and regional needs in the Middle East and Africa.

The plan also includes gradually using more locally made materials, such as aluminum and glass, to support Egypt’s industries and cut down on imports.

Egypt aims to increase renewable energy and has moved its target of producing 42% of its electricity from renewable sources to 2030, five years earlier than planned.
