An Exclusive Conversation with the Visionary behind Starsky Aviation Captain Ahmed Nur: Rebuilding a Nation’s Aviation Backbone

Captain Ahmed Nur Interview

In a region where air travel has long been constrained by fragmented infrastructure and limited connectivity, one entrepreneur has reimagined what aviation can mean for an emerging nation. From founding a modest travel agency to becoming one of Somalia’s most influential aviation leaders, Captain Ahmed Nur’s journey reflects resilience, ambition, and an unwavering commitment to national development.

In this exclusive conversation with The Arab Today, the founder and CEO of Starsky Aviation shares the inspiration behind his transformative work, the challenges of rebuilding a nation’s aviation sector, and his bold vision for Somalia’s future on the global stage.

The Genesis of an Aviation Ecosystem

We began by asking about the inspiring transition from founding Starsom Travel and Tourism Agency to leading multiple aviation ventures and establishing a multi-faceted business group.

“What inspired you to transition from a travel agency to establishing an airline like Starsky Aviation, and what is the scope of your aviation group today?”

Captain Nur reflected: “The transition was driven by a deep-seated desire to transform Somalia’s aviation landscape. Growing up, I witnessed the challenges faced by communities due to limited connectivity. My conviction led to the establishment of Starsky Aviation, our flagship carrier. Today, this vision has expanded into a comprehensive aviation ecosystem comprising five key entities:

  • Starsky Aviation Ltd
  • Diamond Wings Aviation Ltd
  • Kasom Air Aviation Ltd
  • Royal Air
  • Network Airline

My goal is not just to run a single airline but to ensure Somalia has a robust, self-reliant, and world-class aviation sector — from maintenance and training to passenger and cargo services.”

Operational Strength and Strategic Connectivity

Starsky Aviation’s growth is underpinned by strategic fleet choices designed to meet the nation’s diverse geographical and logistical needs.

“Tell us about the operational capacity of Starsky Aviation today, and how it is helping to connect the region.”

“Starsky Aviation has grown to become one of Somalia’s largest private carriers. Our current operational fleet includes two Fokker 50s, four Embraer 120s, one CRJ 200 aircraft, and a Fokker 100 aircraft. This mix allows us to serve both major hubs and smaller, more challenging domestic airfields.

We have expansion plans well underway to introduce two Boeing 737-800 freighters and two Boeing 737-800 passenger aircraft. This significant fleet update will strengthen our international routes and cargo operations, providing a vital bridge for trade, mobility, and humanitarian aid.”

In addition to fleet development, Starsky Aviation has invested heavily in safety and quality systems, ensuring strict adherence to ICAO standards and national aviation regulations. A dedicated Safety, Quality, and Crew Training division ensures ongoing compliance and operational excellence.

Rebuilding the Nation: Impact and Anecdote

Starsky Aviation’s most significant contribution lies in its role in national reconstruction and connectivity, particularly through the rehabilitation and re-opening of dormant airports.

“Starsky is credited with reopening many inaccessible airports. How challenging was this process?”

“Our strategy involves more than just flights; it is about national development. We’ve worked closely with local communities, elders, and the Federal Government to reopen more than 30 previously inaccessible or non-operational airports across Somalia. We believe in building trust before building runways.”

Beyond the statistics, the impact is deeply personal. The revitalization of the airport in Caabudwaaq—a community once isolated by conflict—is a powerful example. This project reconnected families, enabled essential cargo delivery, and symbolized the return of dignity, safety, and economic activity. These airport reopenings have generated thousands of indirect jobs, boosted local trade, expanded emergency-response capabilities, and revived the aviation economy in regions long left behind.

Leadership Recognized: A Testament to Excellence

Captain Nur’s strategic approach, merged with a commitment to local development and international standards, has earned him both corporate and personal distinction.

“Your company and your personal leadership have received substantial recognition. Can you detail these achievements?”

“We are proud that Starsky Aviation has been recognized as the Best Airline and Business of the Year Company for Six consecutive years (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025). This sustained excellence affirms that our focus on quality, reliability, and customer service is making a difference.”

He continued: “Personally, these accolades are a tribute to the team. I have been honored with multiple appointments and awards, including being named three times among the 100 Most Influential Somali People, receiving the Businessperson of the Year award three times, and being recognized once as the Most Visionary CEO of East Africa.”

The Future: Self-Reliance and Excellence

Looking ahead, Captain Nur is focused on cultivating a future defined by self-reliance and global competitiveness, particularly through investment in Aviation Institute.

“What is your vision for Starsky Aviation over the next five years?”

“The next phase is about building sustainable, local capability. That means not only expanding our fleet and international routes but also investing heavily in human capital through Aviation Institute. We are focusing intensely on building local expertise in aviation maintenance and pilot training, a crucial step in achieving true self-reliance. Ultimately, it’s about positioning our entire aviation ecosystem as a sustainable, world-class entity that serves both Somalia and the broader East African region.”

A Legacy of Reconnection and National Renewal

Captain Nur’s journey is not only a business success story; it is a story of national pride, reconstruction, and visionary leadership. Under his guidance, Somali aviation is undergoing a renaissance:

  • Communities once cut off by conflict are reconnecting.
  • Young professionals are gaining access to world-class training.
  • Somalia is emerging as a competitive regional player.

As Somalia steps confidently into a new era, leaders like him are proving that aviation is not just about travel; it is about transformation, dignity, and national pride.

In his words:

“Aviation is more than aircraft; it is hope, connection, and opportunity. Somalia deserves a world-class aviation sector, and we are committed to building it.”
