Egypt and Syria Sign Two Agreements to Boost Energy Cooperation
Egypt and Syria have signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector. The agreements focus on natural gas supply and petroleum products and are part of wider efforts to improve regional energy cooperation.
The agreements were signed by Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Syria’s Ministry of Energy. The signing took place during a meeting between Egypt’s Petroleum Minister, Karim Badawi, and Syria’s Deputy Minister of Energy for Oil Affairs, Ghiath Diab. A senior Syrian oil delegation also attended the meeting.
Gas Supply to Support Electricity
The first agreement aims to supply natural gas to Syria through Egypt to help generate electricity. Under this deal, Egypt will use its existing energy infrastructure, including floating gas regasification units and national gas transmission networks. This will help Syria access gas more easily and support power generation during a time of energy shortage.
Egypt has developed strong gas infrastructure in recent years and is using this capacity to support neighboring countries. By transporting gas through Egypt, Syria can benefit from reliable supply routes and modern facilities.
Petroleum Products and Infrastructure Support
The second agreement focuses on meeting Syria’s needs for petroleum products. Discussions also covered future cooperation to rebuild and repair Syria’s gas and oil infrastructure, which has been damaged over the years.
Egypt offered to share its technical experience and expertise to help Syria restore and modernize its energy sector. Egyptian specialists could support projects related to gas processing, transportation, and oil facilities.
Egypt’s Role as an Energy Hub
During the meeting, Egypt highlighted its readiness to provide technical support and energy services to Syria. Officials stressed Egypt’s strategic position as a regional energy and logistics hub for both traditional and clean energy.
Egypt has strong capabilities in liquefied natural gas (LNG) handling, regasification vessels, and gas pipelines. These assets allow the country to support energy cooperation across the region.
Regional Energy Partnerships Expanding
These agreements come as Egypt continues to expand its regional energy partnerships. On Sunday, Egypt signed another MoU with Qatar to increase cooperation in LNG sales and imports. The deal strengthens the energy partnership between the two countries and includes plans for new investments over the next five years.
Egypt has also recently signed energy agreements with other countries in the region. This includes an MoU with Lebanon to support energy supply and an agreement with Cyprus to connect Cypriot natural gas fields to Egyptian processing facilities.
Growing Regional Influence
These developments further confirm Egypt’s growing role as a key energy center in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. By using its advanced infrastructure and experience, Egypt is helping neighboring countries improve their energy security while also attracting new investment.
The agreements with Syria are another step toward stronger regional cooperation and long-term energy stability in the region.
