IHG and Aldar will turn 6 connected hotels on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island into one large luxury resort

Aldar and IHG Join Forces to Create a Luxury Resort on Yas Island. Aldar, a property developer, is working with IHG Hotels and Resorts to combine six hotels on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, into one large luxury resort.

What’s in the Deal?

  • The hotels in the Yas Plaza complex will be renovated and redesigned to join IHG’s Vignette Collection, a group of unique, high-end hotels.
  • The new resort will be called Straylight Yas and will become the largest Vignette Collection resort in the world.
  • It is expected to open in late 2025 and will add 1,389 rooms to IHG’s hotels in the UAE.

Key Features of the Resort

  • A tunnel for direct access to the beach.
  • A new shopping and dining area.
  • Connections to the Yas Links Abu Dhabi golf course.
  • New facilities like golf and beach villas, a beach club, open-air theater, and independent dining spots.

Yas Island, launched in 2009, is a popular destination known for entertainment and tourism. IHG currently operates 33 hotels in the UAE and plans to open nine more in the future.

Aldar’s Expansion

Aldar is working on several big changes to grow its business. It plans to turn the Tilal Liwa hotel in the Al Dhafra region into a Vignette Collection resort. This resort will open partially later this year and fully by mid-2025, adding 110 rooms to IHG’s hotel group.

The company announced it will spend $408.4 million (AED 1.5 billion) to upgrade its hotels and take advantage of the growing tourism industry in the UAE, focusing on the luxury travel market.

As part of these efforts, Aldar is partnering with Hilton to rebrand the Eastern Mangroves hotel under Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria brand. The project will include upgrades to rooms and suites, new retail shops, and improvements to the marina and residences.

Abu Dhabi Tourism Growth

In 2023, Abu Dhabi saw a 27% rise in hotel guests compared to the previous year, with a 54% jump in international visitors. This aligns with the city’s goal to attract 39.3 million visitors by 2030.

Tourism growth has been boosted by the new terminal at Zayed International Airport, which can handle 45 million passengers, and popular attractions like the Saadiyat Cultural District and Yas Island.
