Jordan and Russia Talk About Stronger Economic Ties in Moscow

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday. They discussed ways to improve cooperation in trade, economy, tourism, and culture.

Trade and Visa Agreements

The two sides are preparing for the seventh meeting of the Jordanian-Russian joint committee on trade and economic cooperation, which will be held in Moscow later this year, according to Jordan’s state news agency Petra.

They also signed an agreement to remove entry visa requirements for citizens of both countries. Tourists can now visit for up to 30 days at a time, with a total stay of no more than 90 days per year. This is expected to encourage more tourism and business.

Safadi and Lavrov confirmed their countries’ commitment to stronger ties, following the guidance of Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. Lavrov said Russia wants to expand cooperation with Jordan, including education and culture. Around 1,500 Jordanian students are currently studying in Russia.

Gaza Situation

During the talks, Safadi called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, an end to the Israeli blockade, and full access for humanitarian aid. He warned that ongoing Israeli attacks threaten stability in the whole region, including the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria.

Safadi said Jordan is working to stop the violence and welcomed Russia’s support for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid. He also stressed Jordan’s support for the Arab Peace Initiative and a two-state solution.

He criticized Israel’s “expansionist and extremist” policies, saying they increase conflict and block peace efforts. He urged the international community to push Israel to accept a ceasefire and allow urgent aid into Gaza.
