Iranian Missile Aimed at US Base in Qatar Is Stopped; Airspace Reopens in Bahrain, Kuwait, and UAE

Iran fired missiles at Al Udeid Air Base, the biggest U.S. military base in the Middle East, on Monday. Iranian state TV said the attack was a direct response to “American aggression.”

Explosions in Doha

Qatar said its air defense systems stopped Iranian missiles that were aimed at a U.S. military base. No one was hurt or killed in the attack. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said on X (formerly Twitter) that it has the right to respond, following international law.

Loud explosions were heard in Doha after Qatar closed its airspace due to Iran’s response to earlier U.S. attacks. People in central Doha and Lusail heard the blasts and saw missiles in the sky, according to AFP.

The U.S. base in Qatar, Al Udeid, is a major military hub with about 10,000 American troops.

A Reuters report said Iran had coordinated the missile strikes with Qatar, and the U.S. was told through two diplomatic channels a few hours before the attack.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran launched 14 missiles. He thanked Iran for the early warning and said the missiles were either blocked or redirected.

The U.S. embassy has ended its earlier advice for Americans in Qatar to take shelter, saying it was just a safety measure.

U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria are also on alert. The Qasrak base in Syria is ready for possible attacks by Iran or its allies.

Middle East Airspace Closed and Reopened

Airports in Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE had closed their airspace but have now reopened. Dubai Airports are running normally again, though some flights may still be delayed or canceled.

In Bahrain, sirens were heard, and people were asked to stay safe. The country hosts the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, which operates in nearby seas.

Flight Disruptions

The airspace shutdowns caused many flight problems:

  • Qatar Airways paused all flights temporarily.

  • Kuwait Airways stopped all outgoing flights.

  • Three Air India flights to Doha were sent to other airports.

  • Singapore Airlines canceled flights to Dubai until Tuesday.

  • Air France, British Airways, and Kazakhstan’s Air Astana canceled flights to Doha and Dubai.

  • Air France also canceled flights to Riyadh and stopped all flights to and from Beirut until Wednesday.

Oil Prices Drop

Oil prices fell by 7% after Iran’s missile attack. There’s no disruption in oil supply yet, but markets are worried about what might happen next.

Oil Companies Evacuate Workers

Foreign oil companies like BP and TotalEnergies moved some of their foreign workers out of southern Iraq due to the rising tensions. Iraq’s Basra Oil Company said operations in the area are still running as usual.

Iran-Israel Attacks

Israel carried out heavy attacks on Tehran, hitting locations linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Evin Prison, which holds political prisoners.

In return, Iran fired several missiles at Israel.

Israel also struck Fordo, a key nuclear site south of Tehran, according to reports from Iranian media and the Israeli military.
