Iraq Signs Deal With US Company SLB to Increase Gas Production at Akkas Field
Iraq’s Ministry of Oil has signed a deal with SLB, a US oil services company (formerly known as Schlumberger), to help boost gas production at the Akkas gas field in Anbar province.
Project Details
Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister for Energy and Oil Minister, Hayyan Abdul Ghani Al-Sawad, said the Central Oil Company will manage the project. SLB has been hired to drill wells and increase production at the field to 100 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd).
This project will add 50 mmscfd to the current output, aiming for 100 mmscfd, with a long-term goal of reaching 400 mmscfd.
Al-Sawad also said that two more contracts will be signed soon—one to build gas processing facilities and another with the State Company for Oil Projects (SCOP) to build a pipeline that will carry gas from the wells to the main processing center.
SLB executive Gokhan Yarim said the company will carry out the work on time, as planned.
Officials from the Oil Ministry attended the signing event.
Power Plant Supply
The gas from the Akkas field will supply the Al-Anbar Combined Cycle Power Plant, which is being built by the Ministry of Electricity. The plant will produce 1.64 gigawatts of electricity and is expected to be finished by the end of this year, according to the Iraqi News Agency.
Gas Reserves
The Akkas field has over 5 trillion cubic feet of confirmed gas reserves. This new deal follows the cancellation of an earlier contract with a Ukrainian company.
Overall, Iraq has about 3,714 billion cubic meters of proven gas reserves, making it one of the world’s top gas producers, based on data from the Gas Exporting Countries Forum.
