Iraq Oil Exports Near 99 Million Barrels in June, Earning $6.7 Billion

In June, Iraq exported about 98.88 million barrels of crude oil, bringing in more than $6.7 billion in revenue, the Ministry of Oil said on Friday. The data comes from Iraq’s State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO).

Where the Oil Came From

Most of the oil—around 97.7 million barrels—was exported from Iraq’s central and southern fields. Another 947,000 barrels came from the Qayyarah field in the north. In addition, 216,878 barrels were sent to Jordan from the Kirkuk region.

From January to June, Iraq exported more than 600 million barrels of oil—an average of over 101 million barrels per month. Most of it (over 590 million barrels) came from the southern and central fields through Basra. Qayyarah supplied about 5.7 million barrels, and Iraq exported about 1.87 million barrels to Jordan. Between March and June, Iraq earned $27.5 billion from oil sales.

New Gas Projects in Basra

On Friday, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani launched two big gas projects in Basra to reduce gas waste and improve energy independence by 2027.

  • A new unit at the Basra Gas Liquefaction Plant will produce 170 million cubic feet of gas and 1,000 tons of LPG each day.

  • The Faihaa Central Gas Facility will handle 130 million cubic feet of gas daily. This will increase condensate output to 200,000 barrels per day, helping both exports and local energy needs.

Dependence on Imported Gas

Iraq still depends a lot on imported gas to power its electricity plants, along with local gas and other fuels. The country is working on urgent and long-term projects to improve electricity supply and reduce blackouts.

In November last year, Iraq’s power supply dropped by 5,500 megawatts when Iranian gas deliveries were temporarily stopped for maintenance. This led to shortages in Baghdad and nearby areas.

Iraq’s ongoing power problems show the need for a strong and balanced energy plan. Right now, Iran provides about 40% of Iraq’s gas and electricity needs, costing around $4 billion a year.

To solve this, Iraq is pushing forward with renewable energy projects to create a more reliable and independent energy system in the future.
