Where Accountability Meets Innovation

We started the interview by asking, “How does Recycle Emirates differentiate itself from other e-waste recyclers in the UAE and GCC?”

Kapil Lal replied, “What sets us apart is how transparent and accountable we are,” says the spokesperson for Recycle Emirates. “When a client hands over their IT equipment, we don’t just say it’s been recycled we prove it. Our Certificate of Disposal comes with a full audit report, detailing serial numbers, destruction methods used, material breakdowns, project dates, and item counts. It’s not a generic statement it’s evidence-based documentation that shows the exact journey of every single asset. This level of reporting helps our clients meet internal audit requirements, comply with government regulations, and maintain corporate accountability.

“On top of that, we hold globally recognized certifications like ISO 45001, 9001, 14001, 27001, and R2, which reflect our commitment to quality, environmental responsibility, data security, and responsible recycling practices. Our operations run under a strict zero-landfill policy, meaning we do everything possible to reuse, refurbish, or recycle materials without contributing to landfill waste. We’ve built secure, documented processes that start from the moment we collect the equipment and continue right through to data sanitization and final disposal, ensuring our clients’ trust and peace of mind.”

From Collection to Final Recycling

The Arab Today: Can you walk us through your end-to-end IT asset disposition (ITAD) and recycling process?

Kapil Lal replied, “It all starts with a clear understanding of our client’s needs,” they explain. “We begin with a consultation to assess the type, quantity, and condition of IT assets to be disposed of. Based on that, we arrange secure, GPS-tracked transportation from the client’s location to our facility. Every asset is logged into our system on arrival, with serial numbers recorded for full traceability.

“From there, we determine the appropriate process whether that’s securing data wiping, magnetic degaussing, physical shredding, or refurbishing. We strictly adhere to global standards such as NIST 800-88 and DOD 5220.22-M to ensure complete and irreversible data destruction. Once processing is complete, we issue a detailed Certificate of Destruction or Recycling, which serves as an official compliance document for the client.

“If a device can be reused, it undergoes a thorough refurbishment process and is remarketed to extend its life and offset costs for the client. Any irreparable parts are dismantled into metals, plastics, and glass, all of which are sent to specialized recycling facilities. This ensures that absolutely nothing ends up in a landfill, aligning our operations with the highest sustainability goals.”

Certifications That Go beyond Paperwork

The Arab Today: What certifications and standards do you hold, and why should clients care?

Kapil Lal replied, “We’re certified to ISO 45001, 9001, 14001, 27001, 45001, 14044, and R2, and we’re also a Microsoft Registered Refurbisher,” the spokesperson says. “These certifications are more than just titles they’re proof that our systems meet global benchmarks for quality management, environmental stewardship, occupational health and safety, and information security.

“Importantly, our processes comply with strict regulations such as PCI DSS, HIPAA, and GLBA, which are critical for organizations in banking, healthcare, and other data-sensitive industries. This means our clients can trust us to protect their confidential data during disposal, while also ensuring environmental responsibility. For many of our clients, knowing that their IT assets are being processed to these rigorous standards is the difference between choosing us and any other recycler.”

Turning E-Waste into Social Impact

The Arab Today: Sustainability and social responsibility seem to be at the heart of your operations. How do you put these values into action?

Kapil Lal replied, “Our zero-landfill policy is just the beginning,” they say. “Every device that comes to us is evaluated for potential reuse, and if it’s beyond repair, we break it down into recyclable components. But our commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental concerns we believe in making a tangible social impact.

“We partner with international NGOs to donate refurbished computers and IT equipment to schools, colleges, and hospital, ensuring that technology reaches communities and institutions that need it most. Since 2006, we’ve worked across the Middle East and North Africa, forming partnerships in more than 12 countries. These donations don’t just reduce e-waste they bridge the digital divide, giving people access to tools for education, healthcare, and opportunity.”

Turning Old Tech into New Value

Lastly we asked, “Tell us about your refurbishing and buyback program. How does it benefit clients?”

“It’s a true win-win model,” they explain. “When businesses upgrade their technology, they often have a large volume of out-dated hardware that still holds value. Instead of discarding it, we refurbish these devices and give them a second life. Clients benefit financially through our buyback program, which helps offset the costs of recycling or even generates additional revenue.

“From collection and secure data erasure to refurbishment, remarketing, and final disposal, we handle everything. This approach not only helps organizations meet their sustainability and CSR goals but also improves their return on investment. Our clients appreciate that they can hand over their IT assets and know they’ll be dealt with securely, responsibly, and in a way that benefits both their business and the environment.” Kapil Lal concluded
